The Best Films In The World

We have decided to create a new program block that includes the latest documentary films which already stole the hearts of jurors at major film festivals. These are top-notch productions, ambitious, but also very pleasing to the eyes and ears. It is also cinema that is simply worth watching – if only to see whether the films awarded at IDFA, Berlinale, and Sundance are actually worthy of the prizes, or are perhaps over-hyped. This is also a great opportunity to watch them in our city, without taking a trip to Germany or the USA.

It's a particularly important section, presenting the newest and the most acclaimed films, popular in the cinematographic world, for the term "World's Best Films" concerns productions which have stupefied the jurors and stolen the audience's hearts at the most famous film festivals. Despite this success, some of them never get widely distributed.

The presentation of such films is not only an unquestionable honour for SEFF, but also an opportunity for cinema enthusiasts to see titles awarded in the world on Szczecin screens, to be moved by their charm and... to make a judgement of their own.

During this year's festival edition we will see:

  • “Taxi Teheran” – a production fitting into the conventions of the documentary genre, has won the hearts of this year's Berinale jury. It is another production by Jafar Panahi, carried out despite the interdiction to exercise his profession in his native country of Iran.
  • "Naked Island" – directed by Tiha K. Gudac, shown at festivals in the entire Europe, awarded with a distinction at the Zagreb Film Festival, received the Heart of Sarajevo award for the best documentary film at Sarajevo Film Festival 2014.
  •  “Cobain: Montage of Heck” – directed by Brett Morgen, it is a piece depicting Kurt Cobain, the legendary leader of the Nirvana group. Rich in intimate, archival materials, it is the only project fully supported by the artist's family.
