DOK Leipzig was founded in 1955 by the “Club of film-makers of the German Democratic Republic” (Club der Filmschaffenden der DDR) under the title “All-German Leipzig Week for Cultural and Documentary Film”, as the first independent film festival of the GDR. Today, DOK Leipzig is the oldest documentary film festival in the world.
 
Since the fall of the Berlin Wall, the “International Leipzig Festival for Documentary and Animated Film” has developed into one of the most dynamic documentary festivals, providing a high-quality, international programme and, since 2004, additional industry offers. Artistic animated film has formed an integral part of the festival for decades. Since 1995 the genre got its own competition. With its Animadoc section, DOK Leipzig also offers a platform to animated documentary. Starting this year, it is the world’s first film festival to award a prize in this hybrid subgenre.
 
Traditionally, DOK Leipzig stands for films advocating peace and human dignity. In view of its varied and exciting history, it celebrates freedom of mind and high artistic quality in film. The festival programme includes five Competition sections for documentary films and animated shorts with 69,500 € in prize money. In addition, the festival offers International Programmes of both genres, Special Programmes (2013: i.e. a focus on Brazilian documentary), an annual Retrospective (2013: “STORM! Through the Short 20th Century in Eight Mass Movements“) as well as Homages and Special Presentations. 
 
Among DOK Leipzig's more than 37,000 spectators watching about 350 films from over 50 countries are approx. 1,500 accredited professionals from all over the world. For them, DOK Leipzig’s “DOK Industry Programme” offers fruitful networking events, financing opportunities for new film projects, the digital DOK Market, exciting panel discussions, master classes and targeted training events.

  • Kern98'

    Kern is excessive in every respect and impressive not just because of his girth. A former Fassbinder actor, he is an aging diva, openly gay, an irritating and uncompromising character. His strong voice fills every room, even if it is only a modest modern flat in the Viennese suburbs. He is on stage everywhere, keeping the two directors Veronika Franz and Severin Fiala on a short leash. He never for a moment permits any illusion about who is directing this film. He turns the camera around and holds the mirror up to us. He is the finger in the wound, exposing our voyeurism and pleasure in the obscene. But Franz and Fiala bravely stand up to him and disarm him by revealing their strategies. This shadow-boxing produces an extraordinary and complex portrait. It’s true that we don’t learn much about Peter Kern the human being, but a lot about the artist he plays so consummately, a role by now inseparable from his self. One of the rare magic cinema moments comes when Kern snuggles up to the cameraman’s hand. One is reminded of “The Beauty and the Beast” – only who is who?

  • Lina Dinkla

    She was born in 1977. Studied Cultural, Film and Media Studies in Leipzig till 2004 (M.A.). After working in several positions for different film festivals (e.g. Int. Short Film Festival Oberhausen, Berlinale Talent Campus, Crossing Europe Linz, Cottbus Festival of East European Cinema) she moved back to Leipzig in 2009. Since then she is Programme Assistant and coordinator of Doc Alliance at DOK Leipzig. When there is enough time she also curates film programmes for other festivals or events and writes film reviews for magazines.

  • Małgorzata Frymus

    She is from Szczecin. Graduated from the Catholic University of Lublin and the PWSFTViT Film school in Łódź. Lecturer at the University of Szczecin. Journalist and reporter for Polish Radio Szczecin, deals mostly with culture topics. She worked with TVP Polish National Television (Szczecin branch). She made several TV programs and reportages. For years she has been working with the OFFicyna Association, the Zachęta Sztuki Współczesnej, and the Stowarzyszenie Ińskie Lato Filmowe. Celluloid Tales is her first documentary film.
